MATAURA
MEETING OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEW CLASS-ROOMS TO BE READY NEXT WEEK At the monthly meeting of the Mataura School Committee Mr W. Buchanan was chairman and there were present: Messrs T. G. Boyd, S. E. Smith, R. Pryde, T. Richmond, A. E. Barnes and C. H. Hargest (secretary). The report of the headmaster (Mr J. Watson) stated that the school opened with a roll number of 333. Since the opening, several children had left to take up primary work in Gore. This, together with the children who left at the end of tile year; would reduce the school from a grade VI to a grade VC school, unless there was a big number of entrants during the year. The number of new pupils to date was 17. The present staff consisted of the headmaster, Mr J. Watson, Mr Anderson, Mr Hamilton and Misses Winning, Nolan, Terry, Speden, Fraser and Bain. It was expected that the new class rooms would be ready for occupation by the beginning of next week. During the holidays, two handsome shields were won by the school. The first was presented by the Limehills school for most points in athletics, and the other by the Invercargill Caledonian Society to the winner of the schools relay race. The training and coaching of the successful pupils was in the hands of Mr Anderson. The sand pit had been concreted and was now in readiness for the sand. CRICKET In a cricket match for the Clark Cup, the Club (holder) beat the Shop Assistants (challenger) by five wickets. The Shop. Assistants batted first and declared with seven wickets down for 81 runs. The Club had no difficulty in passing this total with five wickets still in hand, Geddes, with 53, being top scorer.
