BOWLS TOURNEY AT EASTER

PROTEST BY OTAUTAU CLUB DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON CENTRE A decision to protest against the action of the Southland Bowling Centre in arranging to hold a rinks tournament at Easter was reached at a meeting of the Otautau Bowling Club. The president (Mr H. W. D. Gazzard) was chairman. A letter was read from Mr J. C. Thomson, secretary of the centre, advising that the management committee had decided to hold a rinks tournament on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Monday. He requested that the Otautau Club make application to hold its Good Friday tournament on some date other than the Easter holidays. He also advised that the matter would come up for discussion at the next meeting. of the management committee, which would be held at the end of the present month. The chairman said that the Otautau Club had run a tournament for the past ten years, and last year was the most successful of all, with an entry of 28. It was a great blow to the members that there was a likelihood of their losing this date, as Otautau was only a small club and it meant a good deal to it, financially and otherwise. He had spoken to the president and secretary of the centre objecting strongly to the arrangement. The argument had been put forward that bowlers were not well enough catered for, but this was absurd, as they had the tournaments at Otautau and Waikiwi on Good Friday and Easter Monday respectively and pairs tournaments at Te Rangi and Southland on the Saturday. He had interviewed Waikiwi players and also Mr Tilley, president of the Western District Sub-Centre, and both were, in favour of the Otautau tournament being retained and of sending deputations to the meeting of the centre. Mr R. Brown said they should try to retain the fixture and if the centre was determined they should fight to the last ditch, i COMPLETION IN ONE DAY Mr G. Sinclair said he had interviewed several prominent bowlers and members of the executive, md pointed out to them that Otautau was not going to take it lying down. He stated that he had been connected with racing for 25 years and with athletics for 20 years, and he ventured to say that in no other sport could such a position have arisen. He also pointed out that the tournament at Otautau was completed in the one day, leaving bowlers free to do as they liked on other days. It was the bounden duty of the centre to consult Otautau before the tournament was decided on, and it was very unfair and unsportsmanlike for it to jump the date. Mr Sinclair said that the centre had tried to boost bowling in the country districts, but the reverse had applied and it appeared to him that the city wanted everything. He moved that a strong deputation be sent to the next meeting protesting against the tournament being held in Invercargill at Easter, and pointing out that bowlers were well catered for at that period of the year. The secretary was directed to ask the secretary of the centre the date of the meeting and the management committee to receive the deputation. It was left to the president and Mr Sinclair to arrange the personnel of the deputation. The top-dressing of the green was brought up by Mr Sinclair, who said that complaints had been received that it was not running very well. It was decided to buy six yards of material immediately. It was decided to rim singles and pairs’ championships and to invite entries, to close on Monday, January 20.
