NATIONAL BOWLS TOURNAMENT

Post-Section Play In Pairs SEMI-FINAL STAGES OF SINGLES FOUR PLAYERS TO CONTEST TITLE (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 13. Brilliant sunshine and comparatively fast greens made conditions excellent for play in the pairs championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament. The programme comprised post-section play on six greens and two matches in the semi-final stages of the singles championship.

Interest centred in the singles games between T. Edwards (Temuka) and J. Perrow (Pembroke) and W. A. Bennett (Hastings). Edwards was the only unbeaten player left in the competition, but he lost the eleventh round game against Bennett and the championship is now being contested by Edwards, Bennett and MacGillivray (Roslyn) and G. C. Claridge (St. Kilda), all one lifers. The championship will not be finally decided until next week. Post-sectional play on the “sudden death” principle left only six pairs: H. Walker and H. W. Gibson (DunedH? Belcher and E. Longworth (St. Kilda). „ . P. Delargey and P. Munn (CanterbTk Smith and H. B. Oakey (Elmwood). „ „ R. B. Clarke and C. E. Tyrrell (Rosly&’j. Sneddon and H. Wilson (Linwood). . In the tenth round game in the singles against J. Perrow, Edwards started well with 2’s on the second ana sixth heads, a 3 on the seventh and another 2 on the eighth. A 3 to Perrow on the ninth end brought the Pembroke man up to 6-11. Edwards’s form still made him the favourite. Each player scored a 4 on the twelfth and thirteenth heads, but Edwards got a 3 and a single on the next two ends to lead 19-11. Perrow scored a 2 and a single on the sixteenth and seventeenth heads, but Edwards retaliated with 2 s in succession to finish the game 23-14 on the nineteenth head. The eleventh round match was a different story. Edwards had beaten Bennett comfortably in an earlier round, biit the Hastings player had shown exceptionally consistent form and his win did not come as a great surprise. Edwards started gathering three singles and a 3 on the first four heads, but then had the misfortune, when lying two shots, to turn one of Bennett’s bowls in. The latter drew another shot to score 2 on the head. Edwards got a 2 on the following end, but Bennett recovered with two 2’s and two singles on successive ends to draw level at 8-aIL A 2 to Edwards and three singles to Bennett gave the Hastings player an 11-10 lead on the fourteenth head. The Temuka player, by no means a young competitor, was showing.signs of fatigue and, lost some of his accuracy. Bennett' still playing very steadily, avenged his earlier defeat, scoring three 2’s in a row and winning the game 18-12 on the twentieth head.

Tomorrow will be occupied by sectional play in the rinks. Results:—

SOUTHLAND PAIRS ELIMINATED

PRESENT CHAMPIONS LOSE IN SECOND GAME

(Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, January 13. As in the singles championship, the second day of the pairs championship saw the elimination of the Southland combinations left in after section play. Only one of the' five pairs which represented Southland today got any distance in post-section play. That was the Northend pair, C. J. McEachran and D. J. Wesney, who just failed in the eighth round to find a place among the last six. McEachran and Wesney. were fortunate to draw a bye in the fifth round, but they won the sixth and seventh rounds so well that they were selected to win the West Harbour green and thus go forward into the finals. Their game with H. Belcher and E. Longworth (St. Kilda) was one in which neither pair had any advantage until the finish. Both played good bowls on a keen green and either would have been a worthy representative in the finals. McEachrans’ leading was a feature of the game and practically throughout the game with Belcher and Longworth he gave Wesney every support. Northend lost this game by two points. It was an evenlycontested game and created much interest. Of the two other Northend pairs which qualified for post-section play W. J. McKitterick and S. C. K. Smith won their first game this morning and then lost to Cormack and Claridge in the second game. These games were played on the North East Valley green, which was in excellent condition for keen play. McKitterick and Smith easily beat A. Stehr and S. Furnell, of Epsom, Auckland, but got a. bad start against Cormack and Claridge and never fully recovered. SMITH’S CAREFUL DRAWING On the first two ends Cormack and Claridge scored seven points and got to 11 before McKitterick and Smith scored a point. Cormacks’ drawing was excellent and even if McKitterick did get the shot Claridge was so deadly in his drawing and raking that the St. Kilda pair had almost complete command of the game. Smith had a hard row to hoe. He fought doggedly, nevertheless, and by careful drawing gave McKitterick his chance with the mat. The scores were now: St. Kilda 19; Northend 3. A 4 and a 3 to Northend put a different complexion on the game, and at 19-10 Northend had a chance, particularly when McKitterick outdrew Cormack and got three shots in a good .position about the kitty. Smith made it 4 with his first bowl and Claridge ran through the narrowest of ports with a fast one. Smith next put in a block, but Claridge weathered it and raked the head for a good save. The scores were decisively in Claridge’s favour, but the game was a good one and showed that had McKitterick and Smith settled down earlier the finish must have been a close one Both Cormack and Claridge played well and it was a surprise to see them eliminated by J. R. Smith and H B. Oakey, of Elmwood, in the last game of the day. T * w AC. Millar and J. A. Wesney (Northend) survived only one game today and Finlayson and. A. C. Taylor rGnret were ’eliminated in the sixth Jound? R. Taggart and J. Plank (Bluff) who were one of the six who qualified with two wins, lost their first game to Qf y the six pairs left in to fight out the finals the Roslyn, Linwood and Canterbury pairs appeal most The Roslyn pair is R. B. Clarke and C. E. Tyrrell Tyrrell was one of the favourites for the singles He is a versatile player and should hold a strong chance. CANTERBURY PAIR FAVOURED The Canterbury pair, P. Delargey and P. Munn, will have a big following. Delargey took part in the Southland New Year tournament. Both he and Munn are first-class draw players. Munn was a member of the Canterbury rink which won the rinks championship at the last New Zealand tourLinwood pair is skipped by H.

Wilson, who skipped the rink which won the rink championship in Dunedin four years ago. He and his partner, S. J. Sneddon, put up a good performance to eliminate Grant, of St. Albans, in the green tie today. There is not a North Island pair left, so that the South Island must win the pairs championship this year. The present champions, D. Hunter and J. W. Lowry, of Petone, were eliminated in the second game today. The rinks championship begins tomorrow. Four days will be taken up in section play.
