CROQUET

TOURNAMENT PLAY AT DUNEDIN SEVERAL FINALS DECIDED Several finals were played in the Otago and South Island croquet championships which were continued at Dunedin yesterday. The consolation match was finished when Mrs Kirk, of Geraldine, won from Mrs Torrance, of the Watea Club, with a 16-point margin. Mrs Telfer played a brilliant game in the women’s championship against Mrs McLeod. The latter had only three points to make when her opponent had made only 12. Then Mrs Telfer picked up a long roquet and went to rover hoop, wiring her opponent at the peg. Next turn Mrs Telfer went to the peg and retired with both balls to the side line. Mrs McLeod picked up a long roquet, and the game became interesting. After separating her opponent’s balls, however, she went boundary and let Mrs Telfer in to finish 26-23. Mrs Telfer again piayed well, when she went on immediately against Mrs Millin. She first made a break of 10 hoops, and after some in-and-out play made another 14, including a double peel, and the game was quickly finished. In the Otago championship, the final of the first life, unfortunately, had to be played in the rain. Mrs McLeod played perfect croquet, going to the peg with one ball and to rover with the other, while McCreath’s clips were still on the first hoop. He then hit in and made 13 points in two turns before his opponent was just able to run on to the peg. In the final of the second life between the same pair, Mrs McLeod definitely was off her play, although the weather in this instance was perfect. McCreath played well, making a good break of 11 points to begin. Play was then in and out, McCreath playing some very sporty shots, which luckily for him came off, and he finished the winner with 20 points in his favour. In the semi-final of this event, between J. Tannock and Mrs McLeod, Tarmock played well at the opening of the first game, going to penultimate in one turn, but he missed with his second ball, and let Mrs McLeod in. She played confidently and consistently well, running out the winner, 26-14. The second game opened well for Tannock, who started with a break again to penultimate, leaving his opponent wired at the peg. Tannock again got in, and made the other round, with a double peel, not in one turn. The game finished out 26-1, Tannock making one hoop for Mrs McLeod. Results:—
