IMPROVEMENT SHOWN BY ROWING EIGHT TRAINING ON WANGANUI RIVER (United Press Association) WANGANUI, January 12. With barely a week left to complete its training before leaving for the British Empire Games at Sydney, the New Zealand rowing eight has lost no opportunity of equipping itself as well as possible for its hard task in Australia. Under the coach, Mr F. H. Ayres, of Christchurch, it has been out on the Wanganui river daily, rowing in the morning and afternoon, and there are definite signs of improvement since the coaching began. When the crew took the water for the first row, critics were sceptical of its reaching the standard required, but the last day or so has seen an improvement and the crew has a much better and more rhythmic swing. Some members at the start were inclined to put a great deal of energy into their strokes, but to use less than the full blade width of the oar. A notable exception was A. K. G. Jackson, who has cultivated a style which, while very effective, looks remarkably easy. C. A. Styles, of Christchurch, also is shaping very well. Although no official announcement has been made as yet, it is generally accepted here that the actual eight to row in Sydney will comprise, in order from stroke to bow:—R. Gould (Union, Wanganui), F. T. Thompson (Christchurch), C. A. Styles (Christchurch), A. K. G. Jackson (Union), H. Benge (Union), J. Charters (Union), O. W. Denison (Auckland) and L. H. Pithie (Dunedin). W. Stodart (Union), cox, C. E. C. Johnston (Dunedin) and P. Stowers (Aramoho, Wanganui), in the event of the eight named being chosen, will accompany the crew to. Sydney as emergencies.
