QUEENSTOWN BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

At the monthly meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council the Mayor (Mr W. H. Overton) presided over the following: Crs Anderson, Aburn, Chalmers, Fix, Schieb, Gavin and Flahive. In reply to an inquiry from the Public Works Department, Alexandra, as to when the council intended carrying out creek improvements in the Government Park, the council stated that because of further commitments on the main highway this work could not be undertaken this year. Discussing complaints received about radio interference in Queenstown the district engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department, Dunedin, expressed appreciation of the undertaking given by the council that as opportunity offered the reticulation system would be examined and any weaknesses rectified. He stated that this action should result in a gradual improvement of the background noise existing on radio sets in Queenstown.

Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P., forwarded a copy of a letter received from the Minister of Defence in which he stated that he had arranged for consideration to be given to the inclusion in the Statutes Amendment Bill of a power to lease defence property such as the Queenstown Garrison Hall for a lengthy period. The letter was received. The Director-General of Health, Wellington (Dr M. H. Watt) forwarded a copy of an Order-in-Council abolishing from January 31, 1938, the Southland hospital districts of Southland and Wallace and Fiord and constituting from that date a new hospital district under the name of the Southland hospital district. It was stated that the first election of members of the board was to be held at the same time as the next ordinary election of members of the local authority. The combined district of Lake has one representative. It was resolved to nominate Mr J. W. Miller, the present representative on the Southland Hospital Board. The application of the Queenstown Tennis Club for permission to lay down a further tennis court on the recreation reserve was granted. The chairman of the lighting committee stated that the water in the dam was a foot below the overflow and stated that the position would have to be watched carefully and asked for the authority of the council to close down the plant at specified hours if it was found absolutely necessary. Authority was granted to do this. It was resolved that the lighting committee meet Mr H. Tomkies, the caretaker of the hydro plant, and draw up a tentative agreement with him to take control of the Diesel plant. This agreement is to be ratified by the council at a special meeting. It was decided to purchase a Sieray lamp, which is now erected on trial at the library corner. A discussion took place on the question of arranging suitable hours for using the town water supply for mrigation. Several councillors stated that they were unable to get enough pressure under the existing arrangement which was 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on the western side of Ballarat street and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the eastern side. It was finally decided that the works committee divide the town into three sections for irrigation. It was decided to put men on to clean up the waterfront and bathing shea. The works committee was authorized to cut briar and noxious weeds on the motor camp and to arrange for moie rubbish receptacles. RIFLE SHOOTING The Wakatipu Gun Club held the final shoot for the year when a 12-bird handicap was fired for the Apex Cup. The shooting conditions were ideal and in a shoot-off between Dr Anderson and L. Veint, who tied with nine birds each, Veint was the winner.
