TREATMENT FOR DIABETICS
Association In
Great Britain
SIMILAR WORK URGED FOR DOMINION
(Special to The Times) AUCKLAND, December 5. Deeply impressed by the work which the Diabetic Association in Great Britain is doing for thousands of sufferers, a Wellington resident, Mr H. Spear, who has recently returned from England, is examining the possibilities of forming a similar society in New Zealand. The objects of the British Association could well be used as a basis on which the New Zealand Society could work, Mr Spear said. The British Association promoted the study of causes and the treatment ■of diabetes and diffused the information so obtained. It acted as an authorita- , tive and advisory body to safeguard the social and economic interests of diabetics, promoted lectures, discussions and correspondence and cooperated with other associations having similar aims, Mr Spear said. The British Association also facilitated the manufacture and distribution of preparations, including foods and beverages, for the use of diabetics. It provided nurses and dieticians, convalescent homes and boarding houses, restaurants and refrshment rooms, schools’ laboratories and clinics. Suitable journals, books and pamphlets were also printed and published. Since he had returned to the Dominion he had been promised considerable support for a Dominion association from persons in Auckland suffering from diabetes, or interested in combating the disease. He now intended to ascertain whether support for the association would be forthcoming in the south.
