CYCLING RECORDS BROKEN

GOOD PERFORMANCES AT EMPIRE GAMES TRIALS (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 5. Under ideal conditions, the Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association decided its first New Zealand trials for the British Empire Games, on Saturday afternoon and evening. An exceptionally high standard of racing was witnessed. In the unpaced 1000 metres time trial event, no fewer than four riders succeeded in registering times within the previous New Zealand record of lmin 16 2-ssec. The last rider to take the track for this event was R. Ulmer (Wellington), who rode the distance in lmin 14sec to establish a new Dominion record and beat the Olympic record by one second. J. H. Gillbanks (Auckland) was second in lmin 15 2-ssec, and T. Roe (Wellington) and E. L G. Hughes (Auckland) dead-heated for third in lmin 16 l-ssec.

Three match races to find the winner of the 1000 metres resulted in R. T. Taylor (Auckland) defeating G. R. Giles (Canterbury) by two to one. The 10 miles paced race was won by A. G. Patrick (Auckland) with M. P. Byrnes and E. L. G. Hughes, both of Auckland, second and third respectively. SEVEN RECORDS BROKEN AT BRISBANE (Received December 5, 6.30 p.m.) BRISBANE, December 5. Seven Queensland records were broken in the Australian athletic championships. Backhouse (Victoria) won the mile in 4min 21 4-ssec.; Mumford (New South Wales) won the 440 yards in 48 4-ssec; Stenner (New South Wales) won the 120 yards hurdles in 14 9-10 sec.; Stubbs (New South Wales) won the three miles walk in 21min 42sec.; McKenzie (New South Wales) won the shot putt with a putt of 45ft sJin.; Metcalfe won the hop, step and jump (48ft 6Jin) and Shetliffe (New South Wales) won the high jump (6ft 4 5-Bin.).
