ATHLETICS

SPORTS AT RUGBY PARK

PROFESSIONAL RUNNERS IN GOOD FORM

Competition was keen and entries big in all events at an unofficial sports meeting held by the Southland Athletic Sports League at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon. The weather was perfect for the meeting and the tracks were in excellent order. There was a fair attendance of spectators. E. Sizemore, who is one of the most promising of the younger professional sprinters this season, ran veil to win the 120 yards race and secure a good second in the 75 yards event. The latter race was won by F. N. Newman, of Gore, who secured the Sheffield at I the Otautau meeting at the beginning [of this season. He was running very well on Saturday. The 220 yards event was won by C. Milne, one of the best of the backmarkers among the sprinters of Southland. He is now getting into his best form and on Saturday showed that he has lost none of that speed which has won big prize money for him in the past two seasons. Two professional and two amateur cycling events were included on the programme and in each the standard of performance was high. In the professional events G. Hoffman was outstanding, winning both the mile and two miles from scratch. A. Shepherd, who was also scratch, rode well and was second to Hoffman in both races. The one mile amateur cycling race was won by R. Aitken from the 45 yards mark, R. Muir (50yds) being second. The two miles event went to A. Drury, who rode a well-judged race from the 25yds mark. K.
