BLUFF

PRESENTATION On Saturday evening the Bluff railways staff gathered at the station to make a presentation to Mr W Mills, engine driver, who recently received advice of his transfer to Invercargill. Mr A. Ramage presided. The chairman expressed the regret felt by all those associated with him when it was learned Mr Mills was to be transferred. During his stay in Bluff he had proved himself “one of the best,” always courteous and considerate towards others. On behalf of the staff, Mr Ramage wished the guest every success and happiness in his future career and then called on Mr H. Jamieson to make the presentation. In asking Mr Mills’s acceptance of a travelling rug, the gift of the staff, Mr Jamieson said all were sorry to lose him from the Bluff station He had shown qualities which gained for him the esteem of his associates and was willing at all times to do good turns to others. His consideration for others had been deeply appreciated and it was felt his place would be very hard to fill. The speaker also wished Mr Mills a happy and successful career. The previous remarks were endorsed by Messrs E. Patterson and G Clark. Mr Mills thanked the donors for their gift and expressions of goodwill, He was sorry to leave Bluff, where he had made many friendships, he said, and had enjoyed the co-operation of the staff. As his transfer was only taking him to the Invercargill station, however, he hoped to visit Bluff on future occasions and renew his friendships at the port. Mr Mills began duty in Invercargill yesterday. BUFFALO LODGE Bro. E. Cameron, W.P., presided at the fortnightly meeting of the R A. 0.8. Lodge. Among those present were several overseas brethren from the vessels in port, including Bro. O’Connor, C.P., who frequently attended the lodge during the running of the intercolonial steamer Maheno. Fraternal greetings were exchanged between the chair and visitors. During an enjoyable meeting items were given by Bros. McLean, McNeill, O’Connor, Cameron, Hawke and others. Accompaniments were played by Bro. W. Hawke. THE WEATHER On Saturday the weather was suitable for outdoor games although there was a fair amount of wind. At night some rain fell. Sunday was fine and sunny but the wind rose again at night and further showers fell. The temperature was cold. Unfavourable weather was still being experienced yesterday and by afternoon the wind had risen to gale force, necessitating a stoppage of work on the waterfront. EUCHRE In spite of counter-attractions, a satisfactory attendance was recorded in Willard Hall at the weekly euchre tournament in aid of the Dominican Convent school. Mr L. Mortimer controlled play and the winners were: Women: Mrs J. Thompson 1, Mrs W. Parry 2. Men: Mr C. Jackson 1, Mr A. E. Budd 2.
