MATAURA

CRICKET first competition match The Mataura Cricket Club played its first competition match on Saturday when it met and defeated Gore B on the home grounds by 89 runs. Hie outfield was very fast, but the fielding of both teams was good. Batting for Gore, Wylie compiled 24 in five hits before being caught by Spooner off Leitch. Bowling for Mataura, Johnstone took one wicket for 18 runs in nine overs, two of which were maidens; Leitch also bowled well, at one stage taking four wickets for 8 runs. Townsend, Leitch and Clark batted well for Mataura. Bowling for Gore, Reid, Kershaw and O’Neill were very successful, all three finishing with very fine averages. Mataura, 7 sets, 95 games; Gore, 9 sets, 106 games. RIFLE SHOOTING Members of the Mataura Defence Rifle Club met on the range on Saturday to fire a seven-shot match for a club trophy at 300 yards. EUCHRE AND DANCE The Anglican Young People’s Club held its dance and card evening on Saturday. There was a good attendance. The winners of the cards were Mrs L. Johnston and Mrs Foley. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs W. Walkden and Mrs B. Ashby. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr Sullivan and Miss I. Monaghan. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs W. McLeod. Extras were played by Messrs C. Healy and H. Cameron. Mr H. Brownsey was master of ceremonies. CARD EVENING The weekly card evening which is being rim by the Mataura Volunteer Fire Brigade was well attended. The winners were Mrs Walkden and Mr A. Lloyd. Consolation prizes were won by Mrs G. Sinclair and Mr R. McCaughan.

TE TUA . TENNIS The first match of the season was played against Orepuki A at Te Tua. Te Tua won by 14 sets to two.
