AMERICAN NAVY TO BE EXPANDED
TWO NEW CAPITAL SHIPS (Received October 31, 6.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 30. The Washington correspondent of The New York Herald-Tribune says that the Navy Department is drafting a programme of expansion, and additions to the Fleet in 1939 will cost approximately 236,000,000 dollars, with an increase in the defence expenditure in 1939 to 1,250,000,000 dollars. The programme provides for -wo 35,000-ton battleships, each costing 60,000,000 dollars; two light cruisers; six submarines; four to six destroyers; and four auxiliaries. These will supplement the two battleships and 80 other units which have been laid down or are being laid down.
