RESERVE BANK NOTES FORGED

CARPENTER SENT TO PRISON (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 19. Convicted in the Supreme Court today on two charges of forging Reserve Bank £5 notes, Charles Alfred Returners, a carpenter, aged 49 years, was sentenced by Mr Justice Reed to four years’ imprisonment with hard labour. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr W. H. Cunningham) prosecuted and called 16 witnesses whose evidence concluded yesterday. Accused conducted his own defence and addressed the jury-for 40 minutes. He said all his actions were those of a man with an innocent mind intent on assisting a friend with the printing of Christmas cards “You seem to nave decided to follow a career of crime,” said his Honour. “What is worse, you led your son into it by getting him to assist you ”
