HAMPSHIRE TWO FOR 100

SECOND INNINGS AT BOURNEMOUTH NEW ZEALANDERS MAKE 324 (Special to the United Press ■ Association) (Received August 25,12.50 p.m.) LONDON, August 24. Hampshire, batting for the second time in the match against New Zealand, gathered runs steadily this morning against accurate bowling by J. Cowie, J. A. Dunning and H. G. Vivian, and has lost two wickets for 100 runs. The weather was beautifully fine and the wicket was excellent when play was resumed. Yesterday was a day of interesting cricket. H. G. Vivian, who is now batting better than at any other part of the tour, brilliantly compiled his first century and reached 1000 runs in first-class matches. He drove exceptionally hard, cut and pulled strongly, and hit two sixes with straight ondrives, and 11 fours. He reached his century in 150 minutes against steady bowling supported by smart fielding.

Herman and Heath, the fast bowlers, showed plenty of life and W. L. Creese bowled accurate left-hand slows. D. A. R. Moloney helped in a partnership worth 97.

New Zealand lost five wickets for 169, but a fine partnership between G. L. Weir and W. N. Carson added 112. Carson played very soundly. His score included five fours, all being strong leg hits. Weir was workmanlike, driving cleanly and placing well on the leg side.

The light faded quickly after tea and New Zealand lost the last five wickets quickly against the steady bowling of Creese.

Hampshire batted for half an hour yesterday. The New Zealanders were the popular attraction at Bournemouth on Saturday, over 4000 people paying £224, a record for the ground for the season. This was eclipsed today, when over 5500 paid over £2BO. A lavish programme of entertainment included attendances at international variety shows, where the “starred” performers were Billy Cotton’s band and Stanley Holloway, the elocutionist.
