BOXING TOURNAMENT IN ST. MARY’S HALL LEADING AMATEURS ENGAGED Several of Southland’s foremost amateur boxers will take part in a special exhibition of boxing in St. Mary’s hall tonight. The tournament is being conducted in conjunction with the Carnival Royal and a splendid night’s sport is expected. R. Baker, Southland lightweight champion, who is now boxing in the welterweight class and is regarded as one of the most promising amateurs ever produced in Southland, will be matched in a special bout. Baker gained a brilliant success over A. D. Wheeler, the Otago champion, at Dunedin last week, and so well did he shape that Dunedin critics prophesied a bright future for him. According to The Evening Star, expert judges agreed that a reproduction of that form at the New Zealand championships at Greymouth in September would entitle Baker to consideration for a place in the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games at Sydney in February. A special item at the tournament tonight will be the “clash,” Maoris v. pakehas. A number of Maoris from Bluff will take part. W. Stanway, J. Kelly, G. Leckie, and a number ’ of pupils from F. Paget’s school will also be seen in action.
