SOUTHLAND CLUB’S MEETING YOUNG RONNIE WINS COLDSTREAM CUP The Southland Whippet Racing Club’s meeting at Steeton Park on Saturday was attended by a big crowd of spectators. The track was slow, but the times registered were good under the conditions as a strong easterly wind prevailed. The chief event, the Coldstream Cup, was won by Mr C. Unwin s Young Ronnie. The same owner also won the Maiden Hurdles with Rosedale and the Free-for-All with Osborne Laddie. Mr L. Maitland registered a “double” with Gold Sway, who, incidentally, won four races at the Invercargill Club’s last fixture. Mr W. Rodgers was the starter. The results were as follows: — JUVENILE HANDICAP, 200 yards. Staunton and Johnstone’s Hot Point 1 C. Unwin’s Osborne Laddie 2 Staunton and Johnstone’s Hot Shot 3 In a thrilling finish Hot PoinUhung on to win by half a head. Time, 12 3-ssec. IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP. 200 yards. Mrs S. Glover’s Wedding Night 1 Ray White’s Ebony Lass 2 E. McCarthy’s Tom Walls Ebony Lass set out to win from end to end, but Wedding Night shot through to win right on the post. Time, 12 2-ssec. LIGHTWEIGHT HANDICAP, 200 yards. L. Maitland’s Gold Sway 1 Mrs R. Ferguson’s Sunshine 2 E. McCarthy’s Tom Walls •> Gold Sway always held command, winning very easily. Tom Walls was close up third. Time, 12 2-ssec. COLDSTREAM CUP, 200 yards.

Burrows’s War Lady 3 From a good start Danny’s Boy almost succeeded in leading from start to finish, but Young Ronnie finished well and won in the last stride. War Lady also put in great work at the finish of a thrilling contest. Time, 11 4-ssec. MAIDEN HURDLES, 200 yards. C. Unwin’s Rosedale 1 B. Boiven’s Danny Boy 2 J. Gellatly’s War Pixie 3 War Pixie and Danny Boy led to the last fence, where Rosedale, jumping in great style, came away and won by two lengths. Time, 14 2-ssec. OPEN HURDLES, 200 yards. L. Maitland’s Gold Sway 1 Mrs W. Mills’s Trix Be Good 2 C. Unwin’s Young Ronnie 3 After being badly placed over the first four jumps, Gold Sway, fencing and galloping brilliantly, won in a decisive manner. Time, 14sec. SCRATCH RACE, 200 yards. In an attempt to break 12sec for 200 yards Staunton and Johnstone s dog Hot Tip was unsuccessful as a strong easterly cross-wind was not conducive to time-making. However, the 12 3-5 sec registered was an excellent performance in the circumstances. FREE-FOR-ALL C. Unwin’s Osborne Laddie (36yds) 1 R. White’s Ebony Lass (29yds) 2 Mrs S. Glover’s Wedding Night (29yds) 3 Won by several lengths. Time, 10 4-ssec.
SNOOKER SOUTHLAND CHAMPIONSHIP Two games in the second round of the Southland snooker championship were played on Saturday evening. H. Thomas beat H. Baty by 110 points to 97, and R. Sharp beat E. Taylor by 159 to 84. The next games will be played between T. Sherlock and A. McKenzie and J. Proctor and A. Ford.
