RUGBY FOOTBALL
MEETING OF UNION SOUTHLAND SELECTORS APPOINTED Messrs E. H. Diack, A. H. Mitchell, and H. S. Strang were appointed selectors of the Southland Rugby teams at a meeting of the management committee of the Southland Rugby Football Union last evening. Last season the selectors were Messrs H. S. Strang, A. H. Mitchell and J. L. Oughton. It was decided to hold Country Day on June 9, and to play a round of club competitions on May 12, Coronation Day. The issue of a programme for club matches was discussed and it was decided to ask the clubs if they would be prepared to see that suitable numbers were affixed to jerseys. The following transfers were granted:—P. McLauchlan, Pirates to Old Boys; H. Frampton Beaumont to Star; T. O’Connor, Ida Valley to Marist; C. Skerrett, Clifton to Star; R. Blue, Waihi to Invercargill; F. Ward, Pukerau to Pirates; J. Ward, Orawia to Pirates, J. A. Dale, Clifton to Pirates. Regrades were granted as follows: T. O’Connor (Marist), first to second; I. Chisholm (Marist), first to second; N. G. Dale (Star), first to second. Sub-Unions Game Letters were received from the Western, Eastern and Northern district sub-unions stating that they favoured the playing of the annual sub-unions’ match between Otago and Southland. The Wakatipu Sub-Union sent a telegram stating that it preferred a visit from a Town team to the subunions game. “It appears that the sub-unions are fairly unanimous about the playing of the game,” said the president (Mr Lopdell), “and all we can do is to leave it to the delegates to the New Zealand Rugby Union annual meeting to arrange with the Otago delegates.” Mr Strang suggested that if Otago desired a match in the country districts it should not be difficult to arrange the sub-unions’ match to be played in, say, Otago Central. The game would prove a good attraction in Clyde, Cromwell or Alexandra. Perhaps the Southland delegates could put that proposition to the Otago delegates, he added. It was decided to adopt the suggestion.
Mr A. J. Deaker, on behalf of the High School Club, advised the withdrawal of the club’s fifth grade B team. Advice of the withdrawal of the Collegiate Club’s fourth grade B team was also received. It was decided to recast the draw in the competitions affected. There were present at the meeting: Messrs L. R. Lopdell (president), T. R. Pryde, C. C. Kenward, H. S. Strang, R. T. Meredith, A. H. Mitchell, E. H. Diack, A. H. Courtis, R. G. Kitto, H. J. Brown, W. A. H. Oliver, and N. R. Brown. Fixtures for Saturday ’ The following fixtures were approved:— Seniors.—Old Boys v. Barron once again showed good form and won the match. The club has held three matches so far this season and this player has won two of them. On Saturday he played two under his handicap. He completed the first nine
holes in 40, three over bogey. His driving became erratic in the second round and this spoilt a particularly good chance of handing in a fine card. He completed the round in 48, eight strokes above the first round. T. W. Feast played a steady game, his score being 86—12—74. R. J. Ritchie and S. B. Taylor also played well.

BOXING
FARR AIMS AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LONDON, April 17. Tommy Farr, the Empire heavyweight boxing champion, says that before long he is going to be world champion. Perhaps he will go to the United States. “A fighter is the toy of bloodthirsty people,” he says. “We have a short life and it is a hard life all the way. It is a good life when you are on top, but it is hell getting there.” PLUTO DEFEATS MARTIN (United Press Association) Auckland, April 19. A decision which amazed the majority of spectators was given in the professional welterweight boxing contest between two Australians, Billy Martin and Bill Pluto. The first round was fairly even. From then on until the final round, in which Pluto showed to his best advantage, the succeeding rounds were definitely in favour of Martin. When the official announcer pointed toward’s Pluto’s comer there was a spontaneous outburst of disapproval. In the professional preliminary between representatives of the Australian warships, Power (H.M.A.S. Vendetta) beat Luxford (H.M.A.S. Canberra) easily on points.
