PRODUCTION OF SPEED

Breeding Of Frisco Boy

WINNER OF ALL AGE STAKES (Special To The Times) WELLINGTON, April 15. Frisco Boy, the All Age Stakes winner, is of a line that is becoming famous for the production of early speed, and the value of Daisy Pointer as a brood mare has increased ten-fold since she was picked up by Mr W. J. Morland, of Christchurch, for £45. Daisy Pointer was foaled in 1920. She had her first race under an amateur, a farmer, who had never trained or driven a horse before he harnessed up Daisy Pointer. She won, and after that she passed through several trainers’ hands, eventually landing at J. Bryce’s stable. For hir» she won a mile race at Wellington by 25 lengths. A severe attack of strangles as a filly affected Daisy Pointer’s wind, otherwise, judged on her breeding (Logan Pointer-Dayspring, by California (imp)-Dhybreak, by VancleveMoonbeam, by Childe Harold-Gracie (imp.)), she would have been a good stayer. She was credited with working a mile and a half in 3.20, exceptional time when she was racing. The first of Daisy Pointer’s progeny was the Rey de Oro gelding Sir Gowan, who showed rare speed as a two-year-old, working a mile and a half at Addington in 3.21. Unfortunately he developed internal trouble and was not at his best in the Sapling Stakes, won that year by War Buoy. The following season Daisy Pointer had a chestnut filly by Rey de Oro which was named Fascination. She was leased to a patron of J. S. Shaw’s stable, and was the first two-year-old winner of the season. With bright prospects of winning the Sapling Stakes, she was a very valuable pacer, and it was an unkind stroke of fortune that brought Fascination to an untimely end a few weeks before the race. While playing in her yard she slipped and snapped a leg. Fascination showed a trial mile of 2.12 the last half-mile in 1.4. Daisy Pointer’s next foal was the beautiful filly Frisco Lady, who, purchased by the August Brothers of Wellington, and trained by M. B. Edwards, won the Sapling Stakes, Champion Stakes, and finished second in the New Zealand Derby, besides winning over a mile and a half at Addington as a four-year-old in the exceptional time of 3.14 4-5.

So keen were they on Frisco Lady, that the August Brothers secured an option over her full-brother, a different type of pacer who threw more to the Logan Pointer than the Jack Potts strain, though inheriting some of the best attributes of both sides. Frisco Boy showed immediate promise in his races, and, the way the race was run, he looked a bit unlucky to .be beaten by Parisienne in the Sapling Stakes. Subsequent form did not confirm this opinion, but the result, of the All Age Stakes indicates that Frisco Boy may at last be coming solid. Edwards has a very high opinion of this three-year-old, and compares him favourably with War Buoy and Gamble at the same age. A two-year-old filly by Truman Direct will be the next of Daisy Pointer’s progeny to race. She is a nice filly, and has shown the family speed as far as she has gone. Daisy Pointer’s - family all - through, have been good racehorses. Dayspring beat a large field in a harness event at Addington, and paced free-legged. Her dam Daybreak, a pony standing about 13.2 won a two-mile saddle race with C. Piper aboard. She was a trotter and was competing, with pacers. It was these facts, coupled with the knowledge that Gracie’s descendants had made fame in Australia that led Mr Morland to put his faith in Daisy Pointer as a matron, and it was with the idea of experimenting with a doubling-up of the famous Hal pacing blood that Mr Morland first became interested in mating the mare with Jack Potts, who traces in three lines to Brown Hal, while Logan Pointer was a male line Hal horse. The Vancleve blood in the pedigree is .also a very valuable strain in Australia as well as New Zealand.
