SLAUGHTER OF WHALES FORBIDDEN

AMERICAN REGULATIONS. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Washington, Oct. 17. Under a new set of regulations issued by the Department of Commerce, under the Geneva Treaty of 1931, American seamen are forbidden to slaughter 14 types of whales threatened with extinction. Eskimos in their own boats and with their own weapons are exempted, because whale blubber is their favourite food. The regulations will have little effect on American seamen, who catch only 2 per cent, of the world’s supply.
