HEAVY LOSS IN THE PHILIPPINES
GOVERNMENT ACCUSED OF FALSE ECONOMY.
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Manila, October 16. The President of Manila (Senor Manuel Quezon) blamed false Government economy for the heavy loss of life in the typhoon and subsequent floods on October 10. The known dead are now 546, and there is little hope for the 1045 missing. Senor Quezon said that the Government was so anxious to maintain the surplus in the Treasury that it failed to maintain important dykes, which could have been done for 50,000 dollars a year. It would now cost 500,000 dollars to repair the damaged dykes, he The Government has promised that the work will be started immediately.
