Mataura FOOTBALL CLUB
THE ANNUAL.SMOKE CONCERT At the annual smoke concert and social of the Mataura Rugby Football Club there was a gathering of about 200 members, ex-members and supporters of the club. The president of the club (Mi - N. McLeod) presided, and the members of the victorious first fifteen were the guests of honour. Mr J. Leitch, sen., presented the Walias Shield to the captain of the senior team (Mr J. Leitch, jun.) and congratulated the team on winning the shield and the Eastern Southland premiership, and also on gaining third place in the Invercargill competition. Mr W. Southern, of the Albion Club, also spoke and congratulated the team and the following players who had gained Eastern Southland representative honours: Messrs J. Leitch, D. Renshaw, P. Amos, J. Adams, and W. McGowan. Mr Leitch thanked the members of the club for their support. Other playing members who spoke were Messrs H. McConnell, P. Amos, A. Webb and E. Gibson. During the evening the following toast list was honoured: “The First Fifteen” (proposed by Mr J. Leitch and responded to by Mr J. Leitch, jun., and Messrs H. McConnell, A. Webb, P. Amos and C. McConnell); “The Visitors” (Mr G. Robson—Messrs W. Forbes and T. Veitch, Pioneer, W. Southern, Albion, F. Kitston, Star, and J. Truan, Menzies Ferry); “Kindred Sports” (Mr J. Leitch—Dr. Groves, v/omen’s cricket, Mr R. Marshall, women’s hockey, Mr E. Craven, Association football, Mr W. Southern, cricket, Mr J. Quilter, Rifle Club, and Mr D. O’Brien, Athletic Society); “K Cup Winners” (Mr B. Scott—Mr J. Quilter); “Eastern Southland Rugby Sub-Union” (Mr H. McConnell—Mr N. McLeod); “Coaches” (Mr J. Leitch—Mr M. G. Adam, sen., Mr E. Briggions, jun., and Mr T. Henery, third grade); “Old Brigade” (Mr H. Anderson—Messrs J. Adam, R. Scott and C. McConneil); “The Chairman” (Mr G. Robson).
