Nightcaps THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE
MANUAL TRAINING At the monthly meeting of the Nightcaps School Committee there were present: Messrs W. Excell (chairman), E. Mason, A. Bennett and the Rev. C. Robinson. Ihe Minister of Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb) wrote stating that representations made to him while visiting Nightcaps had been placed before the Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser). It was regretted that no funds were available this year for the provision of additional dental clinic accommodation. He advised that an increased amount would be made available for capitation purposes. Advice was received that accommodation was not available at Riverton for Form 111 pupils for manual training and home science education.
The chairman said that the Southland Education Board was favourably inclined to support a proposal that manual training and home science facilities should be provided at Nightcaps. Such accommodation could be additional to a permanent district high school, which would also be provided if sufficient support was forthcoming. The headmaster (Mr O. V. Berry) said that parents were being asked to signify their willingness to support the proposal by allowing their children to attend the district high school. The promised support was very good. It was decided to make application for a permanent high school with manual training and home science accommodation. It was decided to endeavour to procure Education Department land opposite the present school ground for agricultural experimental uses. The headmaster reported that attendances had been as follows for the term: Primary, 116.3; secondary, 19.3. The roll number was: Primary, 120; secondary, 21.
