The value of macaroni: Good macaroni has a high food value, and should find a frequent place in our menus. Do not buy a long loose variety, but one of the many packet brands which are made in small pieces. Such macaroni is clean and nourishing. To save coal: Fill an empty tin with sifted cinders and damp tea leaves. When the fire is red and glowing put it on with a lump of coal beside it. Sprinkle a little rough slack over the coal and the tin. A shabby umbrella can be renovated by brushing with a solution of ammonia and warm water. Leaks in household utensils can be stopped temporarily by the application of yellow soap and whiting. Melt the soap and mix it with the whiting to the consistency of a thick paste. Save the skins of oranges and lemons, dry them in the oven, grate on a suet grater, and keep in glass bottle for flavouring purposes. A little butter added to blancmange gives it a richer flavour, and an attractive gloss when turned out. Never wash a baby’s clothes in water containing soda. This is a frequent source of irritation and chaffing. If a cracked egg has to be boiled, wrap it in greased paper, tie with string, and put it in boiling water.
