Mataura OBITUARY

MRS MARGARET McLEOD Mrs Margaret McLeod, who died at her residence at Brydone at the age of 79 years, spent most of her life in the Heddon Bush and Brydone districts. The late Mrs McLeod arrived at Port Chalmers in 1860 on the Henrietta, with her parents, the late Mr and Mrs C. Livingstone. She took an active part in the work of the Presbyterian Church, of which she was an ardent member. In 1879 she was married to Mr Neil McLeod and 30 years ago the family purchased its holding at Brydone, when that settlement was broken up. Her husband predeceased her some six years ago, and she is survived by a family of seven, one son, Mr Andrew McLeod, having been killed in the Great War. The other members are: Messrs Donald McLeod (Riverslea). John McLeod (Christchurch), Thomas McLeod (Timaru), William McLeod (Mataura) and Mesdames T. Swale (Invercargill). T. Richmond (Mataura) and Miss Isabella McLeod. There are 27 grand-children. PERSONAL Constable Brazier, of Mataura, is on annual leave. Accompanied by Mrs Brazier, he left by car for the north yesterday. Miss A. G. Adam, McQueen Avenue, has returned to Mataura after an extended holiday, during which she visited Australia. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING The weekly shoot of the Mataura Miniature Rifle Club was held in the Horticultural Hall. Tire third round of a four-night trophy was fired. By returning a possible 80, the second scored by him this season, R. C. Barclay topped the list. He also wins the cup presented by Mr W. Webb. The next best cards were: W. Webb, 79; A. WOMEN’S DIVISION At the monthly meeting of the Brydone branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Mrs Mawdsley presided over a good attendance. 1116 roll call was “An idea to improve the division.” The competitions were decided as follows:—Flower competition: Mrs Byers 1, Mrs Coker 2. Most useful article made from one skein of wool: Miss Taylor 1, Mrs Coker 2.
