SOCIAL EVENING The July meeting of the Wyndham and district St. Andrew’s Scottish Society, which vzjs held in the Masonic Social Hall, took the form of a social evening. There was a large attendance of members, especially of young people. The Chief (Mr W. Frame), with a Chieftain (Mr J. Young), was piped to the platform by the Wyndham Pipe Band. Before opening the proceedings, he made reference to the illness of Mrs A. Campbell and expressed a hope for her speedy recovery. Items were given as follows:—Song, Miss Elsie McLeod; recitations, Mr T. McFarlane; songs, Mr R. McDonald. Miss B. McLauchlan was accompamste. The Pipe Band played several selections. The Leckie family provided dance music and Messrs J. Young, J. Lines and J. Mitchell were floormasters. A guessing competition for a goose was won by Mr J. Arnott, who guessed the correct number, 122. BIBLE CLASS TEA A successful Bible class tea was held in the Sunday School Hall by members of the Wyndham and Mimihau Presbyterian Bible Classes and their friends. Over 50 were present. Later the company listened-in to a broadcast from station 3YA, Christchurch, of an interdenominational service for youth conducted by Messrs J. L. Hay and F. R. Bremner and the Rev. Alan Watson. GOLF Following is the draw for a stroke round to be played by the Wyndham Ladies’ Golf Club this week:— To-day: Misses P. Malcolm and M. Stevenson; Misses C. Stevenson and Hallman. Saturday: Mrs E. J. Traynor and Miss L. Wilson; Mesdames Jefferis and G. Smith; Mesdames A. Wilson and Hall; Mrs A. Gibson and Miss R. Crosbie; Miss F. Milne and Mrs Malcolm; Miss L. Richardson and Mrs L. Harper; Misses B. McLauchlan and H. Baird; Misses B. McLaren and M. Baird; Misses L, Rice and M. Campbell; Miss V. Heaps a bye. On Friday, the following players from the Wyndham Ladies’ Club will travel to Queen’s Park for a friendly game:— Misses L. Rice and M. Baird, Mrs A. Wilson, Misses L. Richardson and B McLauchlan, Mesdames E. J. Traynor, A. Gibson, L. Harper, Malcolm and G. H. Smith, and Misses F. Milne, L. Wilson, B. McLaren and M. Campbell. A cold east wind and soft underfoot conditions were responsible for disappointing scores in the July medal competition. The result was a tie between Miss Leila Rice 92—9—83, Miss L. Richardson 102—19 —83 and Miss Patricia Malcolm 102—19—83. The play-off will take place this week. BOXING The weekly classes of the Wyndham Boxing Club are drawing fair attendances and members are preparing for the Invercargill and Wyndham tournaments. C. Kidd, who joined the club at the beginning of the season, is boxing well. Besides being a stylist, he mixes . it freely, counters effectively, and is quick to take advantage of an opening. J. Enright, a new member, in his first spar at the club, fully extended A, Cameron who, however, was greatly handicapped by his shorter reach and height. Another new member, A. Malcolmson, had his first spar on. Saturday night. He was matched against E. Allison and there was a lively bout. The following local boxers have entered for the Invercargill tournament: A. Cameron, flyweight, novice and open; L. Mclvor, middleweight, novice; G. Cameron, lightweight, novice; W. Thompson, light heavyweight, open; G. Sinclair, middleweight, novice; J. Sinclair, welterweight, novice. RETURNED SOLDIERS At the monthly meeting of the Wyndham branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr E. Rabbidge presided. The Rev. F. C. Lawrence delivered an address on Palestine, where he saw active service. Mr Lawrence dealt with Palestine as the soldiers knew it and as it was now, speaking on aspects of the Jewish settlement and innovations the Jews had made. Mr W. F. Bennetto moved a vote of thanks to the speaker. This was seconded by Mr A. G. Bain and carried. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy and good wishes to Mr George Ferguson a returned soldier who is an inmate of Southland Hospital. The chairman stated that he had sent a letter of sympathy to Mrs D. C. McPhedran in the death of her husband, who has served in the South African War. Mr R. M. Davis introduced the question of forming a district branch of the League of Frontiersmen. He said that he had interviewed the organizer in Dunedin and the organizer was willing to visit Wyndham if members were interested. The matter was held over until next meeting, for a special meeting, Mr Davis in the meantime to communicate with the organizer. A song was contributed by Mr J. Halliday. FLAG 500 There was a good attendance at the Menzies Ferry Hall for a flag 500 tournament and dance held by the Menzies Ferry Football Club as a benefit to Mr W. Baird, who injured his leg while playing earlier in the season. Prizes were won by Mrs J. Johnston, Miss Pollard and Mr M. Clarke. Mrs R. Erskine supplied music for the dance, and Mr L. Heydon controlled the floor. Mr G. Pow won a box of chocolates as a prize for a guessing ■competition.
