“HIT AND RUN” DRIVER

FINE OF £l5 IMPOSED. (United Press Association.) Gisborne, June 15. A “hit and run" driver who ran into a girl cyclist, appeared before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., this morning and was fined a total of £l5 and had his licence cancelled for 12 months. The accused was a Maori, Osborne Hura, who pleaded guilty. Detective McWhirter stated that the speed of accused’s car was described as “terrific,” and a friend who had been in town with him on the day of the accident said that the accused was so intoxicated that he had prevented him from using his car until later in the day. Counsel said that accused’s recollection of the incident was very vague, although he remembered hitting something. _____
