GORE BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. USE OF COUNTY GRADER. The fortnightly meeting of the Gore Borough Council was held last evening. There were present his Worship the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) and Councillors W. K. Hamilton, J. A. Baldey, R. L. Reid, N. Robson, T. Sim, F. S. Graham, A. McLachlan, J. A. S. Aitken. G. C. Hamilton, A. H. W. Aitken and W. T. Trusler. Acknowledgment of the council’s donation of £5 5/- to the Southland Children’s Health Camp Association was made by the secretary, Mrs E. V. McKeever, of Invercargill, who expressed the gratitude of the association. Advice that the Southland County Council would make its grader available for use by the Borough Council when convenient was contained in a lettei- from the county clerk, Mr H. C. Gimblett. The charges for the two graders were £5 6/6 and £2 12/- a day respectively, plus the operator’s wages. These prices were for grading on gravelled streets only and an additional charge would be made for scarifying work, depending on the nature of the work. It was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee with power to act. The borough foreman, Mr A. Richardson, reported that the comer of Oxford and Hamilton streets had been widened and a picket fence removed. A new fence had been erected and a kerb and channel installed. The grass had been cut in the children’s playground and the swings repaired. Works Committee’s Report. The following clauses in the report of the Works Committee were adopted: Letter from J. A. Blaikie regarding drainage: It was recommended that Mr Blaikie be advised that Level street is sewered full distance; Brown street is not and no provision has been made for sewering same. The council does not provide sewer until satisfactory arrangements are mad; by owners of properties. Application for two verandah posts: It was recommended that this application be left with his Worship the Mayor to interview Mr Howard to use hooks instead of verandah posts. Hay’s Corner: It was recommended that the foreman of works be instructed to put down a kerb and channel along the portion of fence line taken from Mrs Hay, the fence to be rounded. As it was the last meeting of the year - the Mayor extended seasonal greetings, the deputy-Mayor (Councillor Baldey) replying.
