New Theatre At Gore. The new motion picture theatre at Gore is becoming nearer to an accomplished fact. The sub-contract for the brickwork has been let to Messrs Briggs and Stephenson, Gore, and no fewer than 70,000 bricks will be used. o—o—o Main Highways Board. The Main Highways Board will visit Gore on Friday, February 7. The Works Committee was appointed by last evening’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council to prepare matters to be placed before the board. o—O —o Gore Angler’s Success. An excellent bag was obtained from the Mararoa River last week by a well-known Gore angler, who, with a friend from Dunedin, spent a few days fishing. They returned to Gore on Sunday night after having caught 29 brown trout, the average weight of which was 51b. o—O—o Christmas Day Pictures. Gore will be one of the towns in which motion pictures will be shown on the night of Christmas Day. Last evening’s meeting of the Borough Council granted permission to Mr H. A. Holmes, of the Regent Theatre, to show pictures on Christmas Day night, subject to the programme being approved by the Mayor and Town Clerk. o—O—o Municipal Conference. The Gore Borough Council will be represented at the Municipal Conference at Napier in March by his Worship the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman). It was decided at last evening’s meeting of the Borough Council that the Health Officer (Mr R. Connor), if he wished, could obtain leave of absence to attend the conference of sanitary inspectors at Christchurch in January, o—O —o Weather In Gore. Excellent weather for pastures and gardens is being experienced in Gore and Eastern Southland. During Friday and Saturday a good soaking fall of rain occurred to be succeeded by fine sunny days on Sunday and yesterday. The weather in Gore yesterday was extremely pleasant, the thermometer registering 71 degrees and there being an absence of wind. The result is that the country round about is looking at its best. o —O—o Staff Appointments. Several appointments to its staff were made by the Gore Borough Council last evening. Mr D. C. McMath, of Rangiora, was appointed surfaceman, and Mr C. Rawson promoted to the position of assistant-gardener. Mr E. D. Henderson, of Invercargill, will fill the position on the council’s staff left vacant by Mr Rawson. o—O —o Powers Of A Board. The powers of a Local Government Loans Board did not meet with the approval of the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman), at last evening's meeting of the Gore Borough Council. He brought forward the following remit, which will be considered by the forthcoming Municipal Conference: “That it be a recommendation to the Government that the powers of the Local Government Loans Board be restricted to consideration of the financial position of local bodies, and that the board should not go into schemes, as local bodies have their own engineers and architects.”
