BAND OF HOPE MONTHLY MEETING (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Band of Hope was held in Willard Hall on Friday evening, when there was a splendid attendance of members. The Rev. A. E. Waite presided and gave a very interesting address, taking as his subject “A Watch.” The speaker stressed the fact that in human life, as with a watch, if the inward “works” are not in perfect order the beauty of the exterior is of no use. The talk was delivered in such a manner that the children could understand it and they followed it with close attention.
A competition in which entrants placed temperance labels on bottles provided much interest. This was divided into two sections, nine years and over, and under nine. In the latter section Ken Spec was successful, while among the older children the placings were: Laura Lopdell 1, Una Bailey 2, Arnot Bailey and William Johnson (equal) 3. The prizes will be distributed at the next meeting of the Band of Hope, while unsuccessful competitors will also be rewarded.
An enjoyable programme was contributed by the children, Mrs Jack Walker acting as accompaniste. Those giving items were: Elsie Denny, Peter Metzger, Audrey Coote (piano solos), Doreen Bailey, Molly Dixon, Isobel Cheyne, Gay Hannan, Joan Dimond, Connie Bradshaw, Wilma Niven, Francis Silvester, Heather Shaw, William Johnson, Gerald Fogarty, Shirley Hart, Alison Winter, Betty Bradshaw, Pauline Metzger, Annie Bulling, Bernard Bulling (recitations), Helen Nicholson, Shirley Johnston (songs), Eleanor Perkins, Bertha Barnett and Margaret Speer; Lily Calder, Rita Calder and Poppy Barnes (vocal trios), Rata Coote (acrobatics). Presentation. On Saturday afternoon a happy little function took place in Willard Hall when the children of the Presbyterian Sunday School gathered for a tea party and to make a presentation to a former teacher, Mrs J. Bremer. The Rev. T. A. Speer welcomed the children, and after doing so expressed appreciation of the services rendered to the Sunday School by Mrs Bremer (formerly Miss D. Calder). The chairman then called on the superintendent, Mr R. N. Porter, to make a presentation to Mrs Bremer. In asking the latter’s acceptance of a crystal fruit bowl, on behalf of the Sunday School teachers and children, Mr Porter spoke of the regard felt for the recipient by members of the congregation and the Sunday School. Mrs Bremer had been ever ready to give her time up to her Sunday School work and to any efforts for the benefit of the church, the speaker said. Since leaving Bluff to reside in Greenhills she had been greatly missed by fellow-teachers and pupils; but one and all joined in wishing her and Mr Bremer every happiness and success in their married life. Mrs Bremer, who was enthusiastically received with musical honours, suitably replied. The rest of the afternoon was devoted to games and the disposal of the good things provided for the children, the function proving a success in every way.
