TEMPERANCE UNION

NEW Y BRANCH FORMED. A party of Invercargill members of the Young People’s Christian Temperance Union recently journeyed to Winton at the invitation of the Winton W.C.T.U. to assist in the opening of a new Y branch. The meeting opened with hymn after which the visitors conducted a model meeting, Mr F. McLean presiding. Mr H. McLean read the Scripture passage and Mr A. Lee led in prayer. A paper on “Alcohol and the Brain” was read by Mr R. Hickens. Miss D. Clow recited and Miss J. Prichard played a violin solo. Mrs Pasley, district Y superintendent, addressed the members and said that the destiny of New Zealand was in the hands of the young people. She urged them to stand for the highest ideals and to do all in their power to make thp country clean. The pledge was affirmed.

At the conclusion of the model meeting, Mrs Pasley initiated 21 new members as the start of the .Winton Y Union. Following on the initiation ceremony the election of officers took place, the following being appointed:— President, Miss Gunn; vice-president, Miss Pearl Anderson; recording secretary, Mr Frank Hall; correspondence secretary, Mr Lloyd Lindsay; treasurer, Mr Jack Hewitt; Beacon agent, Miss Olive Campbell; superintendent, Mrs Anderson. Mr S. Guthrie handed to each Wmton member a copy of the Beacon. The meeting closed with the benediction.
