TE TUA NOTES

COMING OF AGE PARTY. (From Our Correspondent.) On Wednesday evening Mrs A. L Whyte was hostess at a very jolly dance to celebrate the coming of age of her younger daughter, Rita. There were about 60 guests present and a varied programme, including streamer and confetti dances, was thoroughly enjoyed by all. During the evening a singing competition caused great hilarity, and lucky spot and Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mr and Mrs D. Whyte and Miss G. Weir and Mr George McKay respectively. Messrs P. Knowler and T. Shaw were the musicians.

At the conclusion of supper and prior to the lighting of the candles on the birthday cake, Mr A. Dickson proposed the health of the guest of the evening, and presented Miss Whyte with a golden key as the customary token of the occasion. Miss Whyte briefly responded. Mr Gilbert Porter proposed the health of the hostess, Mrs A. L. Whyte and briefly alluded to her widely known activities and hospitality throughout the district. Mrs Whyte and Mr George Whyte spoke a few words in reply. Dancing was then continued to a late hour when the singing of Auld Lang Syne brought to a conclusion a very happy evening. Those present were: Mrs A. L. Whyte and Miss Rita Whyte, Mr and Mrs D. Whyte (Clifden), Mr and Mrs A. Whyte (Orepuki), Mr and Mrs A. Dickson (Otahu), Mrs Mclntosh (Pukemaori), Miss Phyllis Horrell (Wendon Valley), Horrell (7), McKay (2), Knowler (2), Sandford (Clifden), Whyte (Pukemaori), Mclntosh, Stuck (Orepuki), Linton (2, Orepuki), Sutherland and Weir; Messrs Whyte (3), Porter, Alderson (3), Stewart (Tuatapere), Mitchell, Geiseg, Knowler (2), McKay (2), Egerton, Mclntyre (Tuatapere), E. Horrell (Wendon Valley), Horrell (2), Linton (Orepuki), Kane (Tuatapere), Sheehan, Shaw, Sandford (Clifden), Nichol and Whyte (Pukemaori). Basketball. The fortnightly flag 500 was held in the school on Monday evening. Counter attractions in the district resulted in a decreased attendance. The winners for the evening were Messrs P. Knowler, H. O’Brien, and T. Shaw (all of Te Wae Wae). The competition for the tea waggon was concluded the same evening, the winner being Mrs B. C. Horrell, and the winning number of teams was 492. Both A. and B teams were defeated by the Tuatapere teams during the week. The A grade match was played on the home grounds, and the score was 11—10 in favour of Tuatapere. Mr Kane was referee. Tlie B grade match was played in Tuatapere and the final score was 13—9. Mr Miles refereed. General. A slight error occurred in the report of the fire at Mr Elliot’s farm. The fire occurred at 4.30 a.m. on Thursday, not Friday as previously stated. It was reported that certain implements belonging to a neighbour were destroyed, but Mr Elliot states this is quite incorrect. Personal. Messrs Horrell, Corkery (Te Wae Wae) and Sheehan and McKerchar, (Happy Valley), have returned from Invercargill where they attended the young farmers’ course. Miss Phyllis Horrell and Mr Eric Horrell, Wendon Valley, are the guests of Mrs A. L. Whyte. Miss Mary Griffin, Invercargill, is spending a short holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Griffin, Te Wae Wae.
