PECULIAR POSITION
CITY COUNCIL EMPLOYEES. DUE TO DELAYED RESULT OF POLL. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 4. The delay which occurred in making the final declaration of the City Council poll has had an extraordinary result in Wellington. At a meeting of the Finance Committee of the City Council to-night the Mayor, Mr T. C. Hislop, said it was correct that a number of employees had been put off that day. During the last few months the council had carried a number of men on a kerbing and channelling scheme. Authority was given to extend the scheme and it had been hoped to start the work sufficiently soon to avoid displacing the workmen., “Unfortunately,” continued the Mayor, “in the first place the unusual delay ir. bringing about the final declaration of the City Council poll held us up. At the first meeting when we did meet we authorized taking the necessary steps to raise loan money. We are now awaiting an Ordei- in Council. Had it not been for the delay, we would have been at least a week ahead. The Order in Council will go through next Monday and that being so, some of these men will be reengaged.” ___________
