RELIEF OF DISTRESS

CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL’S VOTE. ELECTRICITY FUNDS USED. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, January 28. To provide money for the relief of distress in Christchurch and. to recompense the Metropolitan Relief Association for the extraordinary expenditure during the last fortnight which has exhausted the available funds, the Christchurch City Council decided to-night to make available £2850 from the Municipal Electricity Department’s funds, which are in credit. This action was taken subject to the approval of the Government, as the Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., explained that an Act of Parliament would be necessary to validate the council’s action.

A petition signed by 1000 relief workers asking the Government for an increase of 10/- weekly in the wages of relief workers was supported by the council.
