The Prize Cow

—Commended— I fed my big brown cow with care, Till she grew to such a size, I entered her into the show To try and win a prize. Daddy took her to the show While I was left at home. Although I did not want to stay I did not even moan. I very soon forgot my woe, When mother said to me: “I’ll take you in the afternoon.” I really was in glee. When we reached the showground My lovely cow I fed. And then I saw upon her head A ticket of bright red. —2 marks to Cousin Dorothy Jellyman (10), Queen street, Otautau. —Commended — I am a first prize cow, I am red and white, My owner calls me an Ayrshire, And milks me morning and night. On a day called show day, My owner leads me around the ring, And the judge puts a red ribbon around my neck, To me, just like a piece of string. I have plenty of grass to eat, And plenty of water to drink, And every day my friends and I Go wading by the brink. On the cold, vzet wintry nights, When everything is in darkness, I lie sleeping under the trees, With my black and white friend, Bess. —2 marks to Cousin Melva Rule (13), Mataura Island.
