My Visit To The Show

—Highly Commended.— Last year, when Invercargill Show day came around, we were all as excited as could be. We arose early in the morning and milked the cows. When the cows were finished we went inside to do the housework. After dad came home from the factory we made the sandwiches and then got ready for the show. When we had everything ready we got in the car and left for town. On arriving in town we looked around the shops and then did our shopping. We met some people from our district on the street and spent some time talking. When we had finished our shopping we went up to the Showgrounds and had our lunch. After lunch, my sister and I walked around the Showgrounds and met two of her school-mates. We looked around the cattle and other animals. As we were walking around we heard an aeroplane and, looking up, we saw the “Faith in Australia,” Mr Ulm’s monoplane, hovering over the Showgrounds After having looked around the implements and new motor-cars we decided to see the side-shows. When we got near them we were nearly deafened by the noise of the drums and sideshowmen calling out their attractions. All the colours of the rainbow could be seen in the dresses of the side-show people. We went in to see the glassblowing, which was very interesting When we went along a little further we met an old friend who paid for us to see a small pony, supposed to be the smallest in the world. When we looked at it we saw that it was standing in a hole dug in the ground. After a while we went on the “Big Wheel.” It was very exciting going away up in the air and being able to see the crowd. There were lots of dartthrowing and weight-guessing competitions, but we did not go near any of them.

When the pony competitions were on we watched them. It was lovely to see so many ponies cantering around the ring. We went over’ to the ring when the Grand Parade started and watched all the lovely animals moving around it. The stately horses and frisking ponies were a beautiful sight. The Pipe Band gave a finishing touch to a glorious scene.

When the Grand Parade was over we watched the pony trots and jumping competitions. After they finished we started for home once more to milk the cows, tired but happy after our day’s outing. —3 marks to Cousin Phyllis Rule (16), Mataura Island.
