My Visit To The Show

—Highly Commended —

It was a glorious summer morning in December when we left home for the last Royal Show. The dew on the grass sparkled in the sunshine as we drove along the beautiful roads to Invercargib. Arriving at Invercargill we had dinner at some nearby tearooms. Then we hastened to the showgrounds where we saw animals, with glossy coats shining in the sunshine, being led round the ring by their proud owners. Tickets and ribbons of blue and red were dangling round the prize animals’ necks.. Next came a row of ponies which were ridden by small girls and boys, ready for a race which was won by a little white pony. We next visited the side shows where we saw some wonderful things including Jolly Ray, the forty-one stone American girl, and the man who could live, drink and smoke under water. We had a great many ice creams, as well as fruit and nuts. At five o’clock we decided to go home, so we had two more rides on the merry-go-round first. I was riding on a little bay horse and was sorry when it stopped. We arrived home at seven o clock, tired but happy after our delightful day at the Royal Show. —3 marks to Cousin Irene E. Hall (15), Aparima, Otautau. —Commended. — ‘One morning I jumped out of bed early, because I wanted to beat my sister to school. As soon as I was ready I went out into the kitchen and started making my lunch. Soon mother came in from the dining-room and asked me what I was doihg. “I am getting ready for school, I said. Mother told me that the show was on and I would miss the train if I didn’t hurry up. When I heard this I ran into the bed-room to put on my best clothes. Soon everybody was ready and we went to the station where numbers of people stood. When the train came we got into it and we were soon in town. As soon as we got off the train we went to my auntie who has a shop in town. After dinner we went to the show and saw a great many interesting things. There were merry-go-rounds, swings and ice-creams. When we got home I was tired and hungry. 1 —2 marks to Cousin Isla Knox (9). Wright’s Bush,
