OBITUARY
MR JAMES BATE.

Mr James Bate, who passed away in the Owaka hospital recently, was wellknown and highly respected in the Aparima district. Deceased was a native of Cornwall, and came to New Zealand 40 years ago. For about nine years he worked for the late Mr R. S. James and others in the Aparima district, and for a time was partner with Mr Merriefield in a farm at Gropers. He eventually sold out to his partner, and later removed to Owaka. MR JOHN TENNANT. Mr John Tennant a respected resident of Wairio, died in the Riverton hospital last week. He was the son of the late Mr and Mrs George Tennant. He spent a number of years in Otautau, and went to the local school. He was a member of the Otautau Football Club and the Brass Band. Deceased joined the N.Z.E.F. on June 20, 1917. and after completing his training he went to England. On March 28, 1919, he married Miss Margaret Lillian Ashcroft at Reet, Hampshire, and returned to New Zealand in October, 1919. Prior to his enlistment he was employed by Messrs Barney and John Smith, Waimatuku, where he remained for 10 years. After his discharge he worked for a while with the late Mr Caldwell Lindsay, Waimatuku, and also with Mr Edward Condon, Flints Bush. In 1920 he secured employment with the Ohai Railway Board, where he remained for six years, until he was compelled to give up work. Deceased had been in indifferent health ever since, and for close on a year had been an inmate of the Riverton hospital. He leaves a widow, three daughters and one son to mourn their loss, and to them is extended the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The interment took place at the Otautau new cemetery, the Rev. H. Hines conducting the last rites.
