VALEDICTORY.
(From Our Correspondent.)
A large gathering of friends assembled to bid farewell to Mr D. Manson, the school teacher, who had accepted another appointment. An enjoyable evening was spent in progressive euchre, the winners being Miss J. Horner and Mr W. Hubber.
After supper Mr T. Homer took the opportunity of presenting to Mr Manson a roll of notes as a mark of appreciation for the excellent work he had done as a teacher at the school. In congratulating him on his promotion he remarked that the school had been taken from a very low ebb and placed on the high standard on which it now was. Not only had Mr Manson shown excellent ability as a teacher but he had taken an active part in the social and sporting life of the community.
Mrs R. Homer, on behalf of the mothers, thanked Mr Manson for not only teaching the children to work but also to play. Further commendation was added by Mr W. Barr. On behalf of the Draughts Club, Mr J. Johnson thanked Mr Manson for what he had done for that club, which was one of the most enthusiastic in Southland. He stated that the guest of the evening had not only welded the club into an enthusiastic body but had shown his keenness in maintaining the top position of the ladder. “For he’s a jolly good fellow” was then sung by all present. In reply Mr Manson said he received nothing but kindness from those present since he had come to the district. He thanked them for their further kindness in making the presentation, stating that although the work had been hard it had been made well worth while by the appreciation shown.
