AIR SERVICES
DEVELOPMENT IN NEW ZEALAND.
KINGSFORD SMITH INTERESTED.
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.)
Sydney, January 4. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith stated to-day that he was still undecided whether to tender for the aerial mail
contract between Cootamundra and Singapore. He would devote much of his time in the immediate future to the development of services in New Zealand. He said the establishment of a service between Sydney and New Zealand had not been seriously considered. The undertaking would be a responsible one.
Sir Charles Kingsford Smith has expressed his willingness to carry the first experimental mail to New Zealand when he takes off from Richmond Aerodrome for New Plymouth, on or about January 12, according to the state of the weather (says the Sydney Sun). He is convinced that a more or less regular air mail service to New Zealand, using multi-engined machines, is possible in the immediate future. Splendid progress is being made with Sil’ Charles’ new machine, the Codock, which will be flown to New Zealand under the command of Squad-ron-Leader White, a prominent Dominion aviator. Sir Charles will probably launch an inter-island mail plane and passenger-carrying service while he is in New Zealand. Referring to the experimental mail, he points out that it would have to be a limited one, and, providing he is willing to co-operate, the Deputy-Director of Posts and Telegraphs, Mr Kitto, would have to devise some means of limiting its weight to 1001 b.
