DOG TRIALS

KEEN COMPETITION SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS A. T. MILLER’S SUCCESS The weather was ideal for the continuation of the South Island dog trial championships at Mossburn yesterday. A dense fog which enshrouded the hillside course delayed the start until about 8.30 a.m., from which hour conditions were well-nigh perfect. Owing to the large entries received in Class 1 this event was continued yesterday, some fourteen, dogs parading before the judges to complete the extensive list of nominations received by the South Island Sheep Dog Association for its second championship meeting. The entries for this season’s championships were not as large as those received for the first meeting of the association which was held at Hakataramea last year, when some 52 competitors lined out in Classes 1 and 11. The main reason for the deficiency in the numerical strength of this year’s nominations is the absence of competition from Canterbury and northern provinces, the heavy travelling expenses to the southern portion of the province undoubtedly accounting for the absence of several well-known competitors. As on the previous day competition was keen and some excellent casts and pulls were witnessed by the army of enthusiasts who again thronged the surrounding vantage points in order to get a good view of the trials. The absence of a glaring sun made visibility much better than when the opening runs took place on the first day, the dogs finding the sheep with little difficulty, despite the steepness of the course. A weight guessing competition which was held in connection with the first day’s trials was won by Mr H. Waldron, of Otago, who guessed the correct weight of the sheep, 8811 b.

A feature of yesterday’s work was the exceptionally good performance of Mr A. T. Miller’s Runt, which the judges declared was the outstanding dog in the competition, although the work of most of the competitors was up to the standard of last year’s championship. The second event, Class 11. (heading, pulling and yarding), an event which carries with it a silver cup and forms part of the contest for the T. D. McLeod Memorial Cup, presented by Mr and Mrs J. Trotter, was not completed yesterday owing to the large number of entries received.. As in Class 1, this event provided keen competition, despite the difficulty many competitors found in yarding the sheep. It is hoped to complete this event at an early hour to-day. The placings of the judges, Messrs J. S. Kennedy (Canterbury), John Scott (Southland) and H. Waldron (Otago), in the opening event were as follows: — CLASS I.
