STOCK SALES

PRIZES FOR PEDIGREE ANIMALS. PRACTICE ASSAILED. (Per United Press Association.) Palmerston North, June 15. The reported tendency of offering prizes for the best stock at private stock sales, thereby weakening the rights of Agricultural and Pastoral Shows as being the main bodies for determining the merits of pedigree stock was debated at a conference of North Island Agricultural and Pastoral Associations held at Palmerston North to-day. The question arose from a recommendation of the secretary’s conference to the effect that the conference should aim at securing legislation to amend the Agricultural and Pastoral Act, making it impossible for mercantile firms and other organizations to hold shows in connection with pedigree stock sales. Several delegates opposed the idea of restricting such activity, claiming it did not in any degree influence the importance of the awards of merit made at Agricultural and Pastoral Shows. The prizes offered at pedigree stock sales were awarded by competent judges. There was no danger of the practice influencing the status of Agricultural and Pastoral Shows and it had to be remembered that there was a danger of having too much legislation. The secretary’s viewpoint was that there was a danger of shows being held in conjunction with pedigree and stock sales instead of sales being held in conjunction with the shows. The secretary to the conference simply desired to bring this- point under the notice of associations, considering that the position would require watching. After the question had been debated at some length, the conference decided to refer the question to the executive for consideration.
