The secretary of the Riverton Football Club wrote asking for the use of the recreation ground for the season, and stating that the club was prepared to pay £1 per year, provided the other sporting clubs did likewise. Cr. The clerk stated that at last meeting of the council the school hockey club had made application for the use of the ground, and it had been referred to the Reserves Committee. Since then he had received a further request from the Girls’ Basketball Club to use the ground once a week for practice. Cr. Philp said he believed in encouraging sport of all kinds, but there was certain expenditure necessary with the upkeep of the grounds, and he thought the clubs interested should contribute their quota. He thought the football club should contribute £1 yearly, seeing they made a charge at the gates for the matches, and the others asked to pay 10/- each per year. The club stated that tne footballers had not the prescriptive right to the ground, but it was under the control of the Reserves Committee, who in the past met the representatives of the clubs interested and generally came to an amicable arrangement. On the suggestion of the chairman, it was resolved to refer the question, to the committee in charge of the playing area and bring forward a report at next meeting. Mr C. The Minister of Justice also wrote regarding the same question, and stated that the representation had been noted and would be considered when the next amendments to the licensing laws were under consideration. The deputy-Mayor said the council had carried out their part as regaids teh publicans’ request, and he moved that they be informed of the contents of letters received from the member of the district and also from the Minister of Justice.—Agreed to. _ Mr E. B. Gee, Napier, wrote replying to the council’s letter regarding payment of rates on sections in South Riverton.
