STEWART ISLAND NEWS

PERSONAL. (From Our Correspondent.) Mr J. Gough, architect to the Southland Education Board, paid a short visit to the island on Thursday. He returned the same day. Miss Thomson, of Halfmoon Bay, left on Thursday for Waimate. The Rev. J. Wylie, of the Oban Presbyterian Church, has been moved to Beaumont and left on Thursday to take up his duties. Prior to the sailing of the Tamatea a large number of friends and adherents of the church gathered on the wharf to bid Mr and Mrs Wylie farewell. Mr J. Gardiner, of Invercargill, arrived on Thursday to take over the charge vacated by the Rev. J. Wylie. Mrs G. Gregg, of Halfmoon Bay, left on Thursday for a month’s holiday in Dunedin. Mrs Holmes and Mrs Freeman, of Blenheim, have been spending a holiday on the island and left for the mainland on Thursday. They were the guests of Mr and Mrs Jordan.

Mr John Goodman arrived on Thursday to spend the High School vacation with his parents. Miss L. Traill and her school friend, Miss G. Abercrombie, of Riverton, arrived on Thursday for the High School holidays. They are the guests of Miss Traill’s parents at Woodslea House. Mr Rankin McKellar is spending a holiday with his father, Mr A. McKellar, of Halfmoon Bay. R.S.A. The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Monday evening. Mr G. M. Turner presided over the following: Messrs J. Sloan, C. Smith, J. Simmers, N. Whipp, G. Aspinall. The question of instituting a relief scheme to help the members was fully discussed. Usually the association’s funds are kept to help over the months when there is no fishing but as the season is such a poor one, the opinion was expressed that something should be done immediately. Owing to the continued bad weather - many of the, men had not earned enough to pay for food.

It was stated that the self help scheme which was started last week was still in operation and could be used to give relief if anybody applied for help. After some furthe. discussion the matter was held over to the next meeting.

To help the funds of the branch Mr G. M. Turner offered to give a novel picture entertainment in the hall. The idea was considered a good one and in order to raise as much as possible it was decided to hold a dance afterwards. Friday, May 19, was fixed for the entertainment.
