DEVOTION TO DUTY

STOKER’S ACT. An unusual incident occurred on board one of the British warships at Portsmouth recently. A stoker who had been ashore on overnight leave reported himself for duty at 7 a.m. with a request to see the officer of the watch. He was taken to the officer, who inquired what he wanted. “Shore leave, sir,” said the stoker. “But you have only just returned, countered the officer. “That is so sir,” the stoker replied, “but I’ve left my house on fire!” This was the case and the stoker allowed further leave, dashed off to help the fire brigade.
