RIVERSDALE NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The end of the school year at Waipounamu was celebrated by the holding of a picnic at the Waikaia Bush on ! Thursday, December 15. Some eight or nine car loads of parents and pupils I were present, and a very successful day was the outcome. The children's running events resulted: —Marjory Clark 1, Shirley Harvey 2, Esmie Clark 3; Donald Clark and Joan Harvey (equal) 1, Eunice Todd 3; Marjory Clark 1, Annis Tayles 2, Jean Tayles 3; Jack Elder 1, Jack Tayles 2, Whinfrey Clark ?• Russell Watt 1, Edna Elder 2, Dave Iggs 3; Valerie Clark 1. Desmond Korrell 2, Shirley Harvey 3; Eunice Todd 1. Whinfrey Clark 2, Jean Tayles 3. Three-legged Races.—Joan Harvey and Donald Clark 1, Jean Tayles and Annis Tayles 2, Russell Watt and Edna Elder 3; Jack Tayles and Jack Elder 1, Eunice Todd and Marjory Clark 2, Whinfrey Clark and Dave Iggo 3; Joan Harvey and Donald Clark 1, Eunice Todd end May Horrell 2, Shirley Harvey and Valerie Clark 3; Jack Tayles and Effie Elder 1, Russell Watt and Edna Elder 2. All Pupils.—Russell Watt 1, Eunice Todd 2, Jack Tayles 3, Annis Tayles 4. Before presenting the priz.es, the chairman of the School Committee, Mr J. Elder, expressed his pleasure at seeing so many pupils and parents present. He presented a prize to every pupil in the school, the prize-list being as follows.—P. Ill: Valerie Clark, Eunice Todd, Donald Clark. P. IV: Joan Harvey. Std. I: Marjory Clark. Standard III: Whinfrey Clark, Jack Elder, Jack Tayles, Annis Tayles, Jean Tayles. Std. V: Edna Elder, Nellie Horrell, Russell Watt, Harold Todd, James Horrell, George Horrell, David Iggo Std. VI: Effie Elder. Attendance prizes were received by 14 pupils out of a number of 18 on the roll. The prizes and certificates of attendance, were presented as follows:—Valerie Clark, Desmond Horrell, Donald Clark, Marjory Clark, Jean Tayles, Annis Tayles, Whinfrey Clark, Jack Elder. Jack Tayles, Edna Elder, George Horrell, Russell Watt, Jim Horrell, Effie Elder. Tire chairman then proceeded to present the awards gained by the pupils at the spring flower show in Riversdale. The Waipounamu School was successful in winning the cup. The award winners were as follows:—First Awards: Pen drawing, Jack Tayles; brush drawing, Annis Tayles; paper folding, Russell Watt; plasticine, Annis Tayles; map of Africa, James Horrell; freehand drawing, Effie Elder; fancy work, Marjory Clark; brush design, E. Elder; brush design, Annis Tayles; patching, Annis Tayles; buttonhole, E. Elder; pen drawing, E. Elder; ornamental printing, Edna Elder. Second awards: E. Elder, brush-drawing; Jack Elder, brush design; Jim Horrell, brush design; Edna Elder, patching; Jack Elder, plasticine; Annis Tayles, paper-mache; Nellie Horrell, sketch; Annis Tayles, ornamental printing; Jack Elder, object drawing; Nellie Horrell, fancywork; Russell Watt, map of Africa; Annis Tayles, freehand drawing. Third award: George Horrell, pen and ink drawing; Effie Elder, fancy work; Effie Elder, ornamental printing; Russell Watt, brush work design; Edna Elder, map of Africa; Edna Elder, sketch of lady’s head.

When all the prizes had been presented the chairman complimented, the committee on its decision to continue the giving of prizes this year. Many schools had decided against giving prizes, he said, but this was not considered a good idea, and since the school’s finances were in a very satisfactory position the custom of prizegiving was retained. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs J. Tayles, who has for some years given a subscription towards the prize fund. The thanks of the committee are also due to Macpherson’s Ltd., for a donation of fruit. The teacher, Mr A. Iggo, was also the recipient of a hearty vote of thanks for the efficient manner in which he had carried out his duties.
