CONCERT BY MIDDLE SCHOOL PUPILS. A most enjoyable concert was held in the hall on Monday the 12th inst., the performers being the Middle School pupils, under the leadership of Mr G. F. Griffiths. Great credit is due to Mr Griffiths for the splendid performance. During the evening the local school prizes were presented, and Mr Mason, Headmaster, pinned a medal on Miss Joan O’Connell, dux of the school. Mr Bruland, on behalf of the local School Committee, thanked Mr Griffiths and all those who helped to make the concert a success. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing, music being supplied by the Melody Wreckers’ dance band from Invercargill. Mr D. S. King carried out the duties oLM.C. Everything is well in hand for the forthcoming school jubilee celebrations to be held early in February. Mr J. Bissett, Auckland, visited his uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs W. Cartwright, over the week-end. Mr and Mrs C. D. Mason are spending the school vacation in the north. Miss P. Powell is spending the school vacation at her home in Tapanui. Mr I. G. Galt left by the limited on Sunday night for Christchurch. A large congregation gathered at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning last and at the close of the service, the prizes and gift books for the year were presented to the young people by the minister. All 50 Sunday School scholars received a book, the prize winners being:— Class I (Miss King): First prize, Hazel McKay; second, Mary Grieve; third, Doris McNaughton. Class 11. (Miss Carter): First prize, Thelma Stevenson; second, Charlie Keith; third, Douglas McKay. Class IH. (Mr J. M. Steans): First prize, Emily Steans; second, Molly Stevenson; third, Gladys Steans. Class TV. J.B.C. (Mrs Hodson): Equal first prize, Joan Stevenson, Doreen and Audrey Hodson; second, Jean Stevenson; third, Joan McLean. In addition 30 scholars also received books for “Church Attendance,” six special prizes being awarded to Joan and Jean Stevenson. Doreen and Audrey Hodson, and Gladys and Emily Steans, all having been present at every morning and evening service. The church choir will render several Christmas Anthems at the service next Sunday morning and lead the singing of special Christmas hymns.
