EXTENSIVE DAMAGE
CONFLAGRATION AT AUCKLAND. BUSINESS BLOCK RAZED, (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, December 18. Damage estimated at over £20,000 was caused by a fire in Broadway, Newmarket, this morning. It arose in the premises of Hutchinson Bros., provision merchants, whose building was destroyed together with the adjoining Teed and Bulls block in which the following had businesses: Stormonts, bakers; J. H. Bull, ironmonger; Mrs Rennie, ladies’ outfitter; David Teed Ltd., chemists; Miss Grose, dressmaker; B. Beckerleg, solicitor, and Dr Frazerhurst. The fire started in the storeroom containing paint and varnishes. A high wind was blowing. Teed and Bull’s building was an old wooden structure and the firemen had great difficulty in saving the other buildings in the vicinity. The City Brigade was called in to help. The insurances were: Hutchinson’s Buildings, £5600, stock and fittings £2400; Teed and Bull’s building, £3285, Teed’s stock £2700; Bull’s £2500 and Rennie’s £325. Others were not available.
