REPORT OF COMMISSIONER. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) ■Canberra, December 18. The annual report of the Commonwealth Commissioner for Taxation states that the sales tax collections for three months amounted to £1,068,000. The number of income tax payers in the Commonwealth is 257,939 with taxable incomes amounting to £119,000,000. The amount of the tax paid was £6,219,000 and, in addition, 7765 absentees were assessed on a taxable income of almost £60,000,000 for tax amounting to £2,750,000. INCREASED WAGES TAX. Sydney, December 18. A Bill increasing the wages tax from 3d to 1/- in the £ has passed through all stages of the Assembly. FURTHER LEVY PROPOSED. (R.ec. 9 p.m.) Sydney, December 18. The taxpayers of New South Wales received another shock to-day when a statement was published that the Lang Government is considering a direct levy of two shillings in the pound on all incomes over an amount to be determined in addition to a shilling in the pound already passed by the Assembly.
