VALEDICTORY

FUL’CTION AT WAIMATUA. Waimatua was the scene recently of valedictory functions on the eve of Miss J. M. Barclay’s departure from the position of infant mistress at the school to take up a special appointment at the Waihopai school. On Tuesday, May 6, the mothers of the district met at Mrs Paterson’s residence and held a handkerchief afternoon. Mrs Crosado on behalf of the mothers present, made the presentation, voicing the gratitude and appreciation of the mothers of the scholars in Miss Barclay’s classes for her kind and efficient service. Miss Barclay suitably replied. On Thursday, May 8, Miss Esther Tiffery, one of the senior scholars, on behalf of all the scholars presented Miss Barclay with two volumes in recognition of her untiring andx effective work in the school. Miss Barclay thanked'them all for the gift. A social was held on Friday evening, May 9,. when a representative gathering of 150 met in the school to do; honour to the guest of the evening; dancing, games, etc. were indulged in. Items were given at intervals by Mr G. J. Reed, T. Montague, W. Sycamore, C. McCarthy, Mr and Mrs J. R. Tapper. Mr F. Finnerty, chairman of the social committee, wished Miss Barclay continued success, in her new sphere of labour and called on Mr A. W. Jones, chairman of the Education Board, to address the meeting. Mr Jones referred to the splendid work accomplished by Miss Barclay. Mr Finnerty then called on Mr J. R. Tapper to make the presentation of a toilet set.. Miss Barclay, in reply, stressed the necessity of the co-operation of the parents with the teachers to obtain the best results. Mr -McDermott made an efficient M.C. Mrs Clark (piano), and Mr Clark (violin) provided the music. Extras were played by Messrs Sycamore, Nally and Mincher.
