UNEMPLOYED RELIEF
BLUFF ROAD CONSTRUCTION. WORK COMMENCED. Following a sharp frost, some 42 of Invercargill’s unemployed, who assembled at the Bluff road in the vicinity of Greenhills to commence on the reconstruction relief works, received a cold reception to- their new occupation. They soon settled down, however, and a good day’s work was put in. The men were allotted into two gangs and commenced their work under the immediate supervision of the two foremen, Messrs J. G. and D. D. Oates. The work is under the direction of Mr B. C. Basstian, Southland County Engineer. Yesterday was devoted to the first stages of clearing the sides of the road in preparation for widening and making bundles of the scrub cut for filling. The staff of the Southland Electric Power Board will commence shifting the power line poles, which are at present situated very close to the metalled surface. Teams for conveying filling material will be on the job on Wednesday morning and from then the work should proceed rapidly. “They are a bit new to the work, but taken all round they are a good lot of workers,” said one of the .foremen to a Times reporter who visited the scene of operations yesterday afternoon. “They were all on the job sharp on time and all settled down quickly to the work and have done a very good day’s work considering it is their first. All seem quite pleased to get employment and we anticipate that they will give good service.” THE MAYOR’S FUND. An additional' donation to the Mayor’s unemployment fund is acknowledged below:— .... £. s. d. lI.D 2 00
